There’s a lot to like about green gardens in the sky. As well as the beauty of a verdant space in the built environment, green roofs have triple bottom line benefits, including reducing urban heat island effects, lowering urban air temperatures, and helping to improve Co2 emissions. Right now, we’re trending towards green roofs that are accessible and usable for all to enjoy, so how about ten of the best to admire?

1. Haileybury City – CBD Early Learning Centre, Melbourne

There’s been a lot of press about the educational benefits of this new vertical campus in Melbourne’s CBD, and the littlest epupils are the lucky recipients of their very own green roof as part of the early learning centre. As is often the case working with existing buildings and infrastructure, load bearing was a challenge. KHD worked with the architect and im电竞下载ioser to supply bluestone sawn pavers, 300sqm of drainage cell for the planter boxes, geofabric and supports for the extensive decking.
2. Mosman family home, Sydney

As the founder of The Greenwall Company, Mark Paul’s home features a number of green roofs and green walls. The gardens, green walls and green roofs have all been specifically im电竞下载iosed to ensure that no matter which way you look out from the interior of the home, greenery is the first port of call. This includes the skylights and top floor windows, which open onto the spectacular green roof.

With a lack of space but the desire for a green leafy outlook, green roofs and green walls were the best space saving option when it came to im电竞下载iosing this premium terrace home. The green roof atop the garage and off the master bedroom offers a sense of serenity, and serves to camouflage a traditionally bland surface.
4. New Bendigo Hospital, Victoria

Completed last July, this green roof comprises 965sq m across 10 individual roof gardens over four levels. The planting im电竞下载ios was completed in conjunction with Oculus, featuring 8672 plants and 33 different species, to complement the row cropping history of the region. Fytogreen also installed 4388sq m of stone ballast spread over five roof levels.
5. 38 Westbury Street, St Kilda

The committed residents of this private 1950s apartment building applied for a council grant to transform their rooftop into a garden space. Not only did they receive it, creating a self-sustaining, natural and indigenous landscape, but they also won a Premier’s Sustainability Award 2016, for ‘Built Environment’. Their green roof proves change is possible when the community commits to improve their environment and standard of living.
6. North Bondi Amenities Upgrade, Sydney

Sam Crawford Architects was engaged by Waverley Council to reim电竞下载ios the community facilities of this amenities block, adjoining a Sydney Water Pumping Station. The upgrade features a striking circular im电竞下载ios, complemented by a green roof installed by Fytogreen that extends across 90sq m with coastal sedges, grasses and ground covers totalling nine different species and 702 plants.
7. Museum of Modern Art (MONA), Tasmania

Completed in 2010, the green roof as part of the MONA is set against the banks of the Derwent River and covers the museum’s ground roof. im电竞下载iosed by Oculus, the extensive roof garden uses many coastal species and a range of succulents for minimal maintenance, as well as a series of planter boxes featuring 4-5m high conifers flanking the arrival staircase from the pier where the catamaran arrives.
8. Orange Regional Museum, New South Wales

In the centre of this regional NSW town, this green roof by Junglefy sits atop a museum to provide a lush, green and best of all, accessible space for the public to enjoy. It’s im电竞下载iosed with a 23-degree slope and spreads across 1200sq m, making it perfect for the young and young at heart to have a picnic, relax and people watch.
9. Bridge Point Complex, Canberra

The Bridge Point complex is prestigious development comprising luxury lakehouse residences, penthouses and apartments, on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin. Junglefy was engaged to im电竞下载ios and install an extensive green roof comprising a garden across 1000sq m featuring 9600 plants and 12 species. The roof is located over the lower level apartments, providing leafy outlooks for the penthouses and other apartments that overlook the roof.
10. George & Allen Apartment, Sydney

Located in Waterloo and featuring 6978 plants, this green roof is the first project by Junglefy where the client was both builder and developer. The project is a high-end residential development, where highlights of the green roof include custom glass-reinforced concrete planters, 16 steel bench seats, podium landscaping and planter box, irrigation and advanced tree stock.
