Nicholas Brunsdon, director of WA practice POST- and this year’s Australian Institute of Architects National Emerging Architect Prize winner, has built a professional foundation through working with small firms, an experience that he considers “a great ladder into entrepreneurial and diligent practice”.

The local architecture and im电竞下载ios scene has seen a significant boom in emerging practices of late, with a growing number of clients backing new smaller-scale firms for their creative energy and inventive im电竞下载ios solutions. A recent case in point is renowned celebrity chef Adriano Zumbo’s newly completed high tea salon, Fancy Nance. Having engaged prolific im电竞下载ios and architecture firm Elenberg Fraser to create the fantastical im电竞下载ios of his first South Yarra venue, the high profile patissiere turned to new kids on the block Studio Tate for his next – though the practice had begun trading only months beforehand.

While there may be a degree of risk involved for clients investing in practices with little in the folio, there is also the compelling prospect of a high impact project that taps into their unbridled enthusiasm, along with, of course, the allure of a competitive fee.

Aided in part by the free publicity generated in the social media age, business-savvy young firms are now equipped to access and activate a wider audience. In his other role as co-founder of not-for-profit urban program, Spacemarket, Brunsdon uses Facebook as a platform to match empty urban spaces with tenants, fostering an online group of peers looking to share a workspace with creative of diverse professions. Brunsdon enjoys his multidisciplinary role, which gives him the opportunity to combine “a sense of community, working with experts, working creatively, working diligently, caring and thinking deeply”.

Small teams often make it possible to stay agile across various projects, allowing a degree of professional variety. To date, Brunsdon has worked on an engaging range of hospitality and residential projects as well as artistic collaborations. “I’ve worked from the ridiculously large to the sublimely small,” Brunsdon says.
